Three dead bodies suspected to be among those arrested by a team of policemen and military soldiers who raided a community in Asari-Tori Local Government Area (Asalga) of Rivers state in the early hours of January 6, 2016 have been found floating in the water close to the community.
The deceased men, according to reports, are still said to be listed as missing while three other corpses were found dead and floating in the water.
When contacted, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmat Muhammad said he would not want to comment on the matter.
Naazigha-Lue, who led other members of the group, said the civil society groups decided to voice out their feelings following the degeneration to dictatorship and executive lawlessness experienced in the state and Nigeria at large.
“The coalition of Civil Society Groups in Rivers state has watched with trepidation and disbelief the resurgence of executive lawlessness, impunity and total regard for the rule of law exhibited by the Federal Government, its security and law enforcement agencies, not only in Rivers state but in Nigeria at large.
“While we support every legal means to sanitise the very corrupt Nigerian society, we hasten to condemn in the very strongest terms, the recourse to self-help, disregard for the rule of law and disobedience to court orders by the present federal government,” the group said.
Reports have also begun to emerge that the Nigerian army was responsible for the deaths, however at this point the military has refused to comment.
