The Lagos State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, January 12, through its committee on health services, has sealed off the blood bank section of Gbagada General Hospital.
According to Vanguard, the committee, which was accompanied by the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFEMAA) took the decision immediately after discovering some unethical procedures during an inspection exercise of the hospital.
Segun Olulade, the chairman of the committee, complained about the unhealthy situation at the blood bank unit, authorising that the unit be the immediately closed.
Dr. Mabel Adjekughele, the HEFEMAA team leader and Executive Secretary, observed that the blood bank was in a bad state, with screened and unscreened blood not separated and advised that the bank be sealed.
The committee also paid a visit to the Cardiac and Renal Centre also located in Gbagada General Hospital, where
Prof. Babatunde Olabode Green, the director of the centre, told the committee that some of the acquired world-class medical equipment are not functioning, either due to improper installations or poor quality of installation materials.
Meanwhile, Isaac Adewole, the minister of health, has confirmed that 40 people have died in Nigeria in a suspected outbreak of Lassa fever.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the minister said: “The total number (of suspected cases) reported is 86 and 40 deaths, with a mortality rate of 43.2 percent.” He also warned Nigerians that the disease has already spread to ten states in the six weeks since the first case was reported.
