A 23-year-old robbery suspect who was paraded at the Lagos state Police Command yesterday, confessed he belonged to a three-man gang which specialised in using motorcycle to rob motorists and commuters in traffic.

Bakare, an ex-convict, said apart from also being a member of the Eiye Confraternity, he was initiated into armed robbery in 2013 by some people he met in prison.

“It was there they gave me orientation on how to rob.

“They linked me up with Sefu at Seme. Sefu used to sell arms and ammunition to me. I got the name of Sefu from prison.

“He used to sell bullets to me at N30, 000 and assisted me in crossing the arms and ammunition from Seme to Nigeria,” Bakare confessed.

“I started robbery in 2014 after I came out from Ikoyi Prison in 2013.

“I was sentenced for stealing a white man’s phone at Ikoyi Club, where I worked.

“Our mode of operation was to stop people and search their bags in traffic; thereafter, we will rob them of their phones and other valuables.

“My role in the gang was to point gun at our victims while others would hurriedly collect money and phones.”

Bakare claimed to have made about N500, 000 from such operations.

Speaking further, Bakare ‘vowed’ to leave robbery if only the Governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, would give him a loan to start a business.

“I want the Lagos State governor to assist me with a loan to start a business. If I am given the loan and have a business, I would stop robbery.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the ex-convict, said the suspect was arrested on January 23, at Ebute-Meta area, during a ‘Stop-and- Search’ operation by a team of policemen.

“During a search of the suspect, one locally-made pistol and six live cartridges were recovered from him,” the CP confirmed.
